A Standardized, Distributed Computing Architecture: Results from Three Universities
نویسندگان
چکیده
At the 16 AIAA/USU Conference on Small Satellites, researchers at Santa Clara University (SCU) proposed a distributed computing architecture for small or multi-spacecraft missions. This architecture extended existing IC, Dallas 1-wire and RS232 data protocols and was adaptable to a number of microcontrollers. Since then, that architecture has been implemented on six university-class space missions at three different universities. As “early adopters”, these universities had the typical challenges of working with a new, evolving standard and adapting the standard to their hardware and mission needs. Each faced additional, program-specific challenges related to project size, scope and infrastructure as well as the student background/training. Still, because of this architecture, every school saw three improvements: accelerated integration and training of new students; rapid modifications of existing systems; and school-wide collaboration among robotics projects. This paper reviews SCU’s distributed computing architecture, discusses the details of its implementation at all three universities, and provides lessons learned/lessons applied to six spacecraft programs: Akoya-A/Bandit-A & AkoyaB/Bandit-C at Washington University in St. Louis, EMERALD & ONYX at SCU, and FASTRAC and ARTEMIS at the University of Texas-Austin. The merits of adopting this architecture as a standard for university-class spacecraft are also reviewed.

Architecture of a Community Infrastructure for Predicting and Analyzing Coastal Inundation
The Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA) has advanced the SURA Coastal Ocean Observing and Prediction (SCOOP) program as a multi-institution collaboration to design and prototype a modular, distributed system for real-time prediction and visualization of the coastal impacts from extreme atmospheric events, including hurricane inundation and waves. The SCOOP program vision is a ...
متن کاملInformation Technology (IT) Architecture Based on Cloud Computing for Muhammadiyah Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)
Muhammadiyah Universities are the largest private university network in Indonesia. Generally, they have similar business process and information system (IS) requirements. However, in reality, each university builds its own architecture and IS. Problems often arise regarding the redundancy of the IS, the lack of a standardized data structure, the absence of data consolidation between ISs and the...

This paper describes PCC, a distributed multidisciplinary research program in Personal Computing and Communication. The rich diversity of emerging services in the area of personal mobile distributed computing gives rise to new complex traffic patterns that impose new requirements on the infrastructure. These requirements call for the design of a completely new system architecture, integrating d...
متن کاملPUNCH : An architecture for Web - enabled wide
This paper addresses the architectural issues that arise in the design of a universally accessible wide-area network-computing system that is capable of making automatic cost/performance tradeoo decisions at run-time. The core system is designed around a three-level hierarchically distributed architecture, a choice driven by the dynamic, incremental, and distributed nature of the information as...
متن کاملInvestigating Sacred Architectural Values of Traditional Mosques Based on the Improvement of Spiritual Design Quality in the Architecture of Modern Mosques (Case Study: Traditional Mosques in Iran)
In the history of Iranian architecture, mosques have always been the apex of Islamic art and architecture. The architecture of mosques seeks inspiration from the concepts of divine words to provide a space connecting the heavens and the material world and create a single spiritual environment. It is so important to identify the transcendental values of the past and choose the most essential val...
